It is very difficult to find an ac for windows that open side to side. I bought this ac three years ago and we use it 24/7 during the weekend, and about 12 hours for each day... We were there because we needed wider vinyl panels for the window mounted unit we just purchased. Noted was a large congregation just within the entrance; many were in the process of carting off air conditioners of various sizes and shapes, so you might be doing yourself a big favour by purchasing a unit soon before the heat returns. But back to your question. A portable air conditioner might be the answer to your dilemma, since you're correct in assuming a central air conditioning system can be expensive (there are various factors involved in cost, so only upon inspection of your home can a quote be figured). Home Depot has a selection of portable AC units that can siphon off excess condensation via a window mounting hose.

To illustrate how this works, they happened to have a unit hooked up to a faux horizontal opening window display, complete with a window vent kit that is able to be installed in both a horizontal and vertical position. Cost might be an issue, as these portable units start in the $400 range, but the ability to cart the unit away when unneeded seems like a great option. There are actually some window mounting AC units specifically made for horizontal opening windows. Frigidaire makes Slider Casement units that provide 8,000 to 12,000 BTU cooling capacity for rooms up to 640 sq. ft. Korean manufacturer LG (who makes many of Sears' Kenmore air conditioners) offers a 10,000 BTU vertical mount unit for $339. And then there is a range from Fedders, which claims to fit windows from 21"-40.5" high and needs 15.5" minimum in width. Just make sure you study up on matching the specifications of the unit with the size and cooling needs of your home; a great resource of reviews and information here.

There isn't a great amount of literature on this subject it seems. I have an air conditioner, the manual assumes that you have a vertical sliding window, but I have one that slides horizontal, so how do I install the unit? Most window units are designed for double hung windows. If you want to place it in a casement window (or a sliding window) you really should use a unit designed specifically for that. However, anything can be hacked. If you build a proper bracket/shelf, and then enclose the top part (plexiglass, for instance) you can probably use what you have (provided it fits, of course). Most of the ones I've seen are install like this with a timber frame made to sit into the window frame then put the air-conditioner inside of the frame and box it out with plywood, but this looks like a much neater installation where the frame is made from c channel with a perspex panel above the airconditioner. It would probably depended on how long you intend to have the air-conditioner install in the window, as to which option you would go with.

Rolling portable units solve all such problems, The only thing that needs fit in the window, sash or slider, is the adapter for the flex duct (similar to a dryer duct) that takes the place of the AC's sitting inside the window or wall. Such units also have the advantage of portability: set them up quickly where ever needed or using whichever window is most convenient. As for casements--assuming that were all you had, the non-crank pane would need to be removed and modified to receive the duct adapter. The inside portable units also offer the advantage of easy cleaning and servicing; and an greater efficiency viz-a-viz a window/wall unit exposed to direct sun and hot outdoor temperatures; and cooling capacity which is not governed by window opening size. I know that there is a lot of dust in the air in my apartment and I find that the filter on this unit, while easy to clean, does not do a good job of filtering. I would have preferred a unit that allows me to use a replaceable Filtrete filter which catches much, much more dust and pollen in the air. While I realize that this would increase the operational cost of the unit, it would also do a much better job of filtering the air.
